Karma Versus Good Life

When people die, they usually think that a person has a perfect life, but when your loved ones sit around to discuss it, they all decide that your life was awful. When the person meets someone new, there is usually a start to a deep connection and immediately a relationship starts to form. Sometimes it could lead to them to think what is next in their lives as that person is in their life forever. For some people, this could be a spiritual sense of karma. Where there are certain feelings or drawn towards to someone or something. In a karmic past life, there is a connection that was already established in the past, but in the present, it may be seen as somewhat new. The texts that are going to be analyzed in this paper are Lady Aoi and Life of Amorous Woman. Using these texts, this paper will examine the character's feeling of melancholy, coping with sorrow, and the deep connection from the past through their lessons from the past.

In the text, Life of an Amorous Woman, this text was written for the male audience, to show the anti-feminist feelings and role-playing as a male writer. There are plenty of ways to define life. But in these stories, the most common way is by their lifestyle. For example, in the Life of Amorous Woman, she went through five different jobs and all of them varied from her first lifestyle. The first was in her current stage which is of an old lady telling her story to the younger people. She starts to describe her life as, “I did not begin life in her humble state (123)”. From this, she was trying to tell the readers, how at the beginning of her journey she did not have the perfect life like everyone else, even though she was of a higher rank in economic stability. The reason being for her decline, was due to her father’s decline as they became bankrupt. So in order to make sure that she was living, she went to find a job, in which she started out as a court service lady. From this, it can be said that women and men define life through their family and relationships that they start to building. In order to gain love, the old lady writes, “I should have come to regard love as the most important thing in life (124)”. Throughout the popularity, she seemed to forget that finding love is important. Love is one of the main factors as to why people tend to suffer from life. If love was not found through relationships, they tend to lose self-control. The same could be the same through Lady Rokujo in Lady Aoi. She has lost her father’s name household, and her husband’s name she suffered from finding love from her external family. “My heart knows no respite from pain (930)”. This quotation shows how she is feeling while she is possessing Lady Aoi’s body. Lady Rokujo knows that the pain would be of a short period of relief but it is from something that difficult or unpleasant. Lady Aoi has everything in life because of that Lady Rokujo felt domineering. Viewing the old lady’s quote from the Amorous Woman and Lady Aoi, both they show that they are missing the emotions of love from their families, and lovers. This is important in so many aspects because in Buddhist Teachings there is a teaching in which those priests are able to dissolve any attachment to feelings or not genuine items in life.

Usually, when someone goes through with a traumatic experience they tend to resist the pain as the pain can be excessive for them to handle. A traumatic experience is done in various situations. In Life of Amorous Women, the old women explain through many men and priests she could not find the peace in order for her to move on from losing the wealth that she once had. From this, the actions that the old women had taken were not as great as she has been through a traumatic experience from losing her family. From this, she starts to use sexual favors in order to forget their traumatic experience through baleful actions. “As fee for this entertainment, the girl will receive but two small pieces of gold. To seel, one’s body in this way is futile work indeed! Such things, I may add, only happen to girls of poorer families (134).” In other words, instead of labeling this as prostitution, they tend to explain what really goes on. If you are really pretty women then that person could easily win over half of the male population. However, many of these women do not realize that being a prostitute man would get an uneasy feeling even though they go to these places.

Usually, traumatic events happen in a person’s life to overcome fear. Overcoming fear in relationships or self-love is important. There are two ways on how this is determined. The first being through the person's intellectual side. When a person is thinking through their brain they usually think of all of the consequences before doing harming themselves and others. In Life of Amorous Women, the old women did try to overcome her past by going to the temple. But, sometimes, listening to one’s thoughts could bring destruction. She explains, “in every respect, I made myself look like a young girl (161).”Along this time, many readers would assume that she trying to be desperate on how she looked back in those days. This is key because she was busy making money for herself by selling her sell-off. In the same way, Lady Rokujo underwent the same situation, but in a different sense. She possessed another living spirit in order to be another person. All of these women think they can be someone else by either wanting to be beautiful or be a complete person. These situations is not acceptable in the Buddhist view, because demanding to be someone else is considered to be an attachment to something or someone once they had control over someone.

In conclusion, situations occur for the person to overcome situations that could hurt them or others. It is important for people to experience every situation so that when times come, they could explain to others what is ethical or not ethical. Then from those situations that they listen, they could be a judge of their actions for that same situation if it occurs to them. Both of these ladies, we're in deep thought of grief, loss, and sadness. To overcome these feelings they did things that were not acceptable to society. Such as prostitution or taking over the enemy's body. There are other ways of coping with sorrow, but the way that these women handled was through immaturity. As these women would recall situations or lessons from their past, it was important for them to connect through the lessons that they learn from those. If they learn, they could move forward with their life.
